There are many types of plastic materials in our life. We can identify them by fire.

1. PE

It burns easily and can continue to burn after being removed from the fire source. When burning, the upper end of the flame is yellow and the lower end is blue. The combustion is relatively complete with very little black smoke. Near the flame, the plastic melts and drips, similar to the flow of mineral candle wax, and the melt is rarely tainted by smoke. After the flame is extinguished, there is an obvious smell of burning paraffin.

2. PP

The combustion phenomenon is roughly the same as that of PE, and there may be a small amount of black smoke. After the flame goes out, there is a petroleum smell similar to kerosene.

3. Nylon or PA

It burns relatively slowly. After the fire source is removed, if the ambient temperature is not too high or there are metal accessories that take away the heat, the burning time will not be long and it will extinguish itself later. The color of the flame is yellow above and blue below. Near the flame, the plastic surface will melt, drip, and bubble. There is a smell similar to burnt wool or nails after extinguishing.

4. PS and ABS

It burns easily and can continue to burn after being removed from the fire source. The combustion is extremely incomplete, the flame is yellow, and there are dense black smoke and charcoal bundles, and the smoke escapes and spreads around. But PS has slightly less charcoal beam. When burning, the plastic surface near the flame softens and becomes less likely to drip. The surface of PS will bubble, while the surface of ABS will not bubble but will be in a coke state. After extinguishing, PS has the smell of styrene monomer, and ABS has a very unique smell.

5.PC

The combustion phenomenon is close to PS, but the burning speed is slow. It will slowly extinguish after being removed from the fire. After extinguishing, it emits a floral and fruity smell.

6. PMMA

There is no charcoal beam flying when burning. The flame is light blue with a white top. After burning, it emits a strong smell of flowers, fruits and rotten vegetables.

7. PVC

It is difficult to burn and will self-extinguish easily after being removed from the fire source. When burning, the top of the flame is yellow and the bottom is green. Sometimes small yellow and green flames are sprayed, white smoke is emitted, and the smell is spicy and pungent. The melt softens while burning and can be pulled out.

8.PET

Burns easily, softens and foams. The flame is orange with a small amount of black smoke. It slowly goes out after being removed from the fire and is accompanied by a sour smell.
